Hoy ENZO (ONZE) cumple doce. Today ENZO (eleven) turns twelve.

The boy grows quickly. It’s hard to believe that four point five years have passed since we made the graphic above (explained) while playing with his name. It’s even harder to believe that he’s been tugging on my ear (OZEN), exploring the world, and bringing joy to our lives for a dozen years (EONZ to him).

Today’s itinerary (ZONE): shooting BB guns (left over from when I was a boy), walking in the woods by the river, eating a menu of his design, and celebrating with a cake baked and decorated by his sister (NOZE).

¡Feliz día, hijo!

Here’s something from the homefront that I failed to mentioned. This happened: Young Enzo/Now Enzo.

We’ll be sharing our work at the Spring South Park Walkabout in San Diego. South Park Quality Meats will be on display together with some of our costumes, embroidery pieces, monsters, birds, bigfoot, monkeys, etc. Look for the new Home Ec. Studio location in the Burlingame Garage. And we’re happy to say that Susie Ghahremani will be there as well. If you have a chance come by and say hi.

Halloween 2008

Two years ago, Enzo decided he wanted to take a closer look at meat. He spent quite a while absorbed in the topic, but then he took a break and switched his focus to Scratch and computer programming. However, our recent stay in Argentina left a big impression on his taste buds and he went right back to drawing and sewing salami and steaks. He’s even started work on one meat related Scratch project.

So when Halloween rolled around this year it made sense for him to dress as a butcher. The costume and side of beef are part of a larger project which we’ll be sharing very soon.

A Segment of Tonight’s Dinner Conversation

Reneé: What books did you get today?

Enzo: Hey Kid, Want to Buy a Bridge?, Knights of the Kitchen Table, Tut, Tut, and 2095.

Me: You also got a book on map making, one on pyramids and another about Gandhi.

Reneé: Guns?

Me: No, Gandhi.

Renee: Oh, the opposite of guns.

Enzo: How do you spell gun?

Sophia: G-U-N.

Enzo: Nug?

Sophia: No, not that type of opposite.

“… And here are some votes for unschooling, freedom, spontaneity (+1), and simplicity (+1 +2) – not to mention the here, the now, slowness (+1 +2 +3), singletasking, idleness, and going with the flow (natural, not societal).”

Enzo via grecolaborativo

Already three years ago, Enzo took a picture of the word zone painted in a parking lot. At the time he initially mistook it for his name. Ever since, we’ve frequently played around with the letters in his name and recently we sat down with the computer to do the same.

This is a little graphic we made showing all of the possible permutations using the letters in his name. Now he also knows the difference between a permutation and a combination. We highlighted the results according to how much we liked each one, the darker ones being favored more than the lighter ones. We’ll probably screen-print some t-shirts (examples and howto) with the ones in black.

ZONE = the original mistaken identity
NOZE = nose or knows (see also NOEZ)
ONZE = ones or once (eleven) or once
ONEZ = ones or owns
EONZ = eons

Enzo trivia:

Some of our favorite other Enzos are designer Enzo Mari; Enzo Arnone, co-author of Ciccì Coccò; and futbol (soccer) great Enzo Francescoli. (As Boca fans, we like Francescoli despite his gallina history.)
The name is often defined as winner. It is an Italian form of Henry which means ‘rules the home’ (not in this case).
One of the primary reasons that Enzo’s (and Sophia’s) name was chosen is because it is pronounced more-or-less the same in both English and Spanish. Of course, a friend of ours mistook his name for end zone the first time he heard it and has called him that since.
